Description
Delicious Southern Smothered Chicken features tender chicken pieces cooked in a rich, creamy garlic-thyme sauce. Perfectly seasoned and smothered with a luscious gravy, this comforting dish is a southern classic ideal for family dinners.
Ingredients
- 3โ4 lbs organic chicken, skin removed (drumsticks + thigh pieces)
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
- 2 tsp Lawry’s seasoning salt, divided
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- ยผ cup organic all-purpose flour
- 4 Tbsps unsalted butter
- 2 Tbsps extra virgin olive oil
- 4 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 fresh thyme sprigs
- 2 cups organic chicken stock or bone broth
- 1 cup organic heavy cream
Instructions
- Season chicken with smoked paprika, 1 tsp Lawry’s salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
- Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown chicken on all sides (4โ5 minutes per side). Remove and set aside.
- Add minced garlic and chopped onion to the skillet. Sautรฉ until fragrant and soft, about 3โ4 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the onion and garlic, stirring constantly to form a roux.
- Slowly whisk in chicken stock and heavy cream, making sure there are no lumps. Add remaining 1 tsp of seasoning salt and thyme sprigs.
- Return chicken to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer 25โ30 minutes until chicken is fully cooked and tender.
- Remove thyme sprigs. Serve chicken smothered in the creamy sauce with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.
Notes
- For extra richness, add a splash of white wine to the sauce while simmering.
- Leftovers store well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat gently to keep sauce creamy.
