  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted โ€“ Brushed on top to enhance browning.

Step-by-Step Method

Step 1: Preheat and Prepare

Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish lightly with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking.

Step 2: Cook the Ground Beef

In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula, about 5โ€“7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.

Add the chopped onion, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Sautรฉ for an additional 2โ€“3 minutes until the onions are softened and fragrant.

Step 3: Prepare the Sauce

In a small bowl, combine cream of mushroom soup and milk. Stir until smooth and well blended.

Step 4: Layer the Casserole

  • Spread half of the thinly sliced potatoes in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
  • Layer the cooked ground beef mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  • Pour half of the cream of mushroom soup mixture over the beef.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes and soup mixture.

Step 5: Add Cheese and Butter

Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top. Drizzle the melted butter on top of the cheese. Optionally, sprinkle paprika for color and extra flavor.

Step 6: Bake the Casserole

Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake at 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15โ€“20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

Let the casserole rest for 5โ€“10 minutes before serving. This allows the layers to set slightly and makes it easier to portion.

Tips for Success

  • Thinly Slice Potatoes: Ensures even cooking and tender layers.
  • Use a Sharp Knife or Mandoline: For consistent thickness.
  • Drain Excess Fat: Helps prevent a greasy casserole.
  • Make Ahead: Assemble the casserole in advance, cover, and refrigerate until ready to bake.
  • Add Extra Flavor: Incorporate diced bell peppers, peas, or carrots for extra nutrients.

Serving Suggestions

  • Simple Sides: Pair with a crisp green salad or steamed vegetables.
  • Comfort Pairings: Serve with garlic bread or biscuits for a full cozy meal.
  • Family Style: Keep the casserole in the baking dish at the center of the table for easy serving.

  1. This ended up very tasty but it took waaaay longer to cook. Maybe I didnโ€™t slice up the potatoes thin enough-I sliced them like scalloped potatoes thickness, not paper thin. Because my kids were starving, I ended up having to microwave the individual portions to get the potatoes to finish cooking. In the future, I would start with precooking the potatoes half way or planning on the longer cook time.
